Pù Luông is a famous location in Thanh Hóa, situated about 130 km northwest of Thanh Hóa City. This area covers two districts of Thanh Hóa: Quan Hóa and Bá Thước. Surrounding it are well-known tourist destinations such as Bản Lác (Mai Châu – Hòa Bình), Cẩm Lương fish stream, and Cuc Phuong National Park. Therefore, the journey to Pù Luông offers tourists the opportunity to admire various beautiful sights along the scenic routes.
Each season, Pù Luông seems to don a new dress. Sometimes it sparkles like a mirror reflecting the blue sky, and at other times, it is cloaked in a vibrant green, very peaceful. When it’s rice harvest season, Pù Luông glows golden on the hillsides, looking lush and romantic. In the distance are the stilt houses of the Thai ethnic people nestled under the limestone mountains interspersed with low earth hills, adding to the uniqueness of the landscape here.
Despite being in a hot and windy central region, Pù Luông has quite a temperate and pleasant weather. Even during the hottest summer days, the weather in Pù Luông remains cool, with fog covering the highland villages throughout the year.
The journey to admire the rice.
The most interesting point when visiting Pù Luông is capturing the moments when the rice season arrives. The photos showcasing the beauty of the rice season make many people eager to set out to witness the serene beauty among the mountains and forests. June and October are the two times when Pù Luông is breathtakingly beautiful with the golden hues of ripe rice. The rice ripens abundantly on the terraced fields along the hillsides, creating a vibrant landscape. During this season, the locals build huts and resting spots to serve tourists for viewing and resting. Standing on the mountain top to take photos is truly ideal.
Hieu village
Bản Hiêu belongs to Cổ Lũng commune, Bá Thước district. When you visit Pù Luông during the rice harvest season, you will be amazed by the 25 km long road from Cành Nàng town to Bản Hiêu. Bản Hiêu is also famous for the Hiêu stream located at the foot of Pù Luông mountain – a place that can turn plants into stones. Due to the large amount of limestone present, the water of the Hiêu stream calcifies the roots of the plants lying beneath it. The end of June or October is also the time when Bản Hiêu is at its most beautiful throughout the year.
Water flows from the waterfalls in the vast forest, creating magnificent sounds. The stream winds through fields where water wheels turn regularly to draw water for irrigation. These water wheels have brought to Pù Luông a pristine beauty that is startlingly peaceful.
Cloud Waterfall
Not only does Pù Luông enchant visitors with the fresh green and golden sheen of the ripe rice fields, but it also captivates people with the sound of the stream trickling through the ancient forest, as if gently comforting the busy life.
Cloud Waterfall is located along the Ho Chi Minh Trail near Cuc Phuong National Park. This waterfall cascades down from the peak of Thach Lam Mountain at an altitude of 100 meters. It has 9 steps that stack upon each other, forming gentle streams.
Conquering Pù Luông Peak
Pù Luông is the largest conservation area in the North with a diverse mountainous terrain at an elevation of 1700 meters. When your feet are planted atop Pù Luông, you will believe that paradise truly exists in this world! Never have the sky and the earth intertwined so closely! Clouds stretch their arms to embrace the mountaintop, gently floating like rippling waves. Looking up reveals a deep blue sky, while ahead lies an ocean of pure white clouds, and your feet stand on solid ground, feeling immensely delighted!
Kho Mường
Kho Mường is a pristine valley located in the buffer zone of Pù Luông Nature Reserve, where the White Thai people have settled for a long time. A must-visit when coming to the village is to explore the Bat Cave—an enigmatic cave forgotten in a still-sleeping land.
From the cave mouth, one can gaze out at the vast valley, surrounded by lush fields of rice with simple stilt houses nestled at the foot of the hill here. Most of these houses have thatched roofs, with cattle and oxen stables below and people sleeping above, a tradition from a thousand years ago.
